Review on Nikon 50mm f1.8 AF-S lens

May 15, 2013

A while back I promised a review on the newly bought Nikon 50mm f1.8 AF-S lens. So… this is it!

First of all, I want to tell you how I decided to buy my first prime lens. I wanted it, first of all, for portrait photography. I would have liked it to cost me less than 1000 Lei and I needed the photographs to be of higher quality and sharper. First I narrowed it to 3 choices which you can see below.

Then I asked for professional help :)  So I sent an e-mail to
Dragos Asaftei, a well-known photography blogger who was kind enough to take the time respond to my dilemma. I told him my needs and expectations, and he helped me decide. In addition, he recommended me an online store where I could buy it for less money (10% off) – great deal! Thank you Dragos!

On the 1st of May it came via currier. I was very excited and I immediately unboxed it and started shooting. I was very much impressed with the sharpness and the “blurred background” effect as a result of the large aperture the lens has (f/1.8).  This also helped me with photographs taken in low light conditions as you can see in the examples I provided at the end of the article. Because it has a bigger, 58mm, filter-attachment size than my other two lenses (Nikon AF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 G VR and Nikon AF-S DX 55-200mm f/4-5.6 G ED VR) which are 52mm in size. This combined with the f/1.8 aperture allows more light to enter the sensor which leads to faster shutter speed in low light conditions. Another feature that I like is the quiet and fast focus engine.

Anyway, I am very pleased with my acquisition, and I’m trying, as much as I can NOT to take it off my camera because of the quality of the photos. It’s very difficult when I need to photograph close subjects because it has quite a large focal length (about 75mm in DX format), that is when I change it with my 18-55mm.

To sum up, the Nikon 50mm f1.8 AF-S lens is a very good starter prime lens for portraits and other situations where you need small depth of field or low light conditions. It is quite cheap in comparison with other high end lenses - about 900 Lei – and delivers very good results so it responded very well to my needs. The results are presented below so you can tell me what you think about them.

So … until next time, take care and keep looking for beauty, everywhere! :)
