Where do you do your best thinking?

April 13, 2013

Approximately 6 kilometers from the center of Targoviste, there is a monastery named "Manastirea Dealu". The translated version of its name is "The Dealu Monastery". It was first mentioned as a monastic settlement in 1431 and ...

Ah... just kidding, I'm not going to tell you stuff you can easily find on Wikipedia. But I am going to tell you that near this history filled place is where I do my best thinking.

Whenever I am troubled or don't know what to do, I just jump into my car and head North, up a twisted road (sometimes maybe faster than I should), park my car at the end of the road, and then I just sit there. Most of the times I, of course, have my camera with me, so I can take pictures like those at the top of this page.

I'm sure I am not the only one in Targoviste that does this. When I was younger I used to go up there with a lot of friends, and used to run into a lot of acquaintances. Most of them are probably still doing it, but I think we just don't cross our paths anymore.

Where do people do their best thinking? Apparently, the top ten most frequent answers to this question are:

"
1.   When I'm alone
2.   Last thing at night/in bed
3.   In the shower
4.   First thing in the morning
5.   In the car /driving
6.   When I'm reading a book/newspaper/magazine
7.   In the bath
8.   Outside
9.   Anywhere
10. When I'm jogging/running
"

as Richard Watson says in an article from 2010 for Fast Company magazine.

Disregarding the fact that Richard's question, as well as mine, was, "WHERE do you do your best thinking?", not when, and the no.1 on that list starts with "When" and no.9 is "Anywhere" (which is a stupid answer, let's be serious), the rest of them are pretty plausible. What do you think?

For me, the answer would have to be "Outside", but more specifically near Manastirea Dealu. I don't know, there's something about that spot that makes me very comfortable with myself and allows me to dig deeper into my thoughts. Maybe it's the view, the sight of Targoviste with all the cars swarming all over the place, and the restless people as opposed to my quiet corner up on the hill separated from all that stirring happening down there. Maybe it's the nature that surrounds me, or the spirituality of the place (I can't deny it; it could be something over there).

Anyway... that's my personal spot. And even if I tried finding a spot in Bucharest, not even one would come close to this one. There may be one more ... but it's a bit far from Targoviste or Bucharest. It's the Belvedere Tampa on the road to Poiana Brasov (you can see the picture on the right). You can't deny it ... it's a nice view.

So, if you ever feel overwhelmed, troubled and need to organize your thoughts, "Manastirea Dealu" is a very good spot to do this. You never know... maybe sometime we'll see each other there;

I'll be on the right side of the road.

Best of luck,
